Attitudes of caregivers toward pain and pain assessment significantly affect patient care and ability to meet patient needs. This has not only been a health care issue in times past, but is true today.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this article the nurse will be able to:
1. List positive attitudes nurses have about pain assessments.
2. Recall negative attitudes nurses have about pain assessments.
3. Describe how important it is to listen to the patient’s perception of his or her own pain.
4. Assess both the physical and psychosocial effects of pain.
5. Explain how pain may be responded to differently depending on culture.
