Taking Criticism
Author: Dowd, S.; Davidhizar, R.

Criticism is common part of the healthcare experience. Having a “thick skin” which does not take criticism personally is an essential characteristic for anyone who works with people. However, this is not always in everyone’s make-up: many of us tie in criticism with self-esteem, and find it hard to handle. As German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer once said, “A thick skin is a gift from God.” One of the arts of people management is being able to be the recipient of criticism without feeling attached.

OBJECTIVES:
1. Define criticism
2. Identify why criticism is difficult to handle
3. Identify the physiological changes that occur when receiving criticism
4. Identify how to effectively manage criticism
