  Treatment of Hypertension
Author: Mary Linda Cuddy

Hypertension affects approximately 50 million individuals in the US. It causes substantial morbidity and mortality, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease including heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney disease, and possibly dementia and cognitive impairment. The last issue of JPN contained the treatment recommendations for hypertension from The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7). (1) This article will briefly discuss the pharmacology of the agents listed in the JNC 7. For more detailed information, the reader should consult a pharmacology text or the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prescribing information.
